The Australian Open has taken a surprising turn, offering Alex de Minaur a more favorable path after Matteo Berrettini, his initially scheduled first-round opponent, decided to withdraw from the tournament. This development undoubtedly enhances de Minaur's chances as he prepares for the competition ahead.
Matteo Berrettini, a former world No. 6, shared on Instagram that he is experiencing a recurrence of abdominal issues that hampered his performance throughout the 2025 season, which led him to miss significant tournaments such as the French Open and the US Open.
"Unfortunately, I’ve felt discomfort in my obliques once again and I won’t be ready to perform at my best level for five sets," Berrettini expressed, underlining his disappointment. "It hurts because playing in Australia is always special, and after four weeks of intense training, I was excited and ready to get going."
He concluded with a hopeful note, stating, "I’m hoping and feeling that I won’t be out from the tennis courts for a long time."
Berrettini’s withdrawal removes what many expected to be an intriguing first-round showdown. The Italian player had recently showcased strong performance by defeating world No. 27 Learner Tien in straight sets at the Kooyong Classic, positioning him as a formidable challenge for de Minaur.
Now, de Minaur's opponent will be Mackenzie McDonald, an American player who, despite losing during qualifying rounds, gets a second chance to compete as a "lucky loser." At 30 years old, McDonald holds a career-high ranking of 37 and boasts a notable achievement of reaching the fourth round at Melbourne Park back in 2021.
As the highest-seeded Australian male player in two decades, de Minaur is set to face McDonald on the iconic Rod Laver Arena this coming Monday afternoon. The main draw of the tournament kicks off on Sunday, with four Australian players ready to take the court.
Among them, Adam Walton faces an uphill battle against the men’s top seed, Carlos Alcaraz, in the evening session on Rod Laver Arena. Additionally, qualifier Jason Kubler is set to compete against Frances Tiafoe, the 29th seed from America, on John Cain Arena, with matches starting no earlier than 5 PM.
Wildcard Talia Gibson will open the action on Kia Arena against Anna Blinkova, followed by Tristan Schoolkate, who will take on the 32nd seed, Corentin Moutet.
The excitement of the tournament’s Opening Week—featuring not just qualifying matches but also concerts and the One Point Slam—drew an impressive crowd of 217,999 attendees, nearly doubling last year’s record of 116,528.
